He has been the husband of his wife Charlene for over 37 years, the father of four adults (Preston, Shannon, JoAnna and John Jr.) and the grandfather of three boys (Eli, Legend and Owen) and most recently a beautiful baby girl (Jaxcyn Love).

He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio-TV-Film Production. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education.

Mr. Harris’ began his professional career in higher education working at institutions like: Dartmouth College (Instructional Media Specialist), the University of Nebraska at Omaha (Student Activities Advisor), the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs) and Adjunct Instructor-Ethnic Studies) and Nebraska Wesleyan University (Coordinator of Service-Learning).

For over 25 years he has work with corporations, community, civic and religious organizations helping them to “keep their promises.” He most recently worked as the Leadership Development Specialist at ALLO Fiber Communications providing management coaching, facilitating workshop and creating professional development opportunities for company supervisors.

In 2016, Mr. Harris spearheaded, along with Officer Genelle Moore a series of community conversations across the city of Lincoln to build better relations between the citizenry and the police. These five community meetings became a comprehensive report that led to increased cultural education for the police, as well as other recommendations to help ongoing efforts in this regard.

In 2023, John was honored by the Clyde Malone Community Center with the Millard T. Woods Community Service Award. In 2014, he was added to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Wall of Honor” for his work promoting equality in his community and the Dr. Melvin Jones Mentoring Award for his work over the years with helping young people in his community.
